Graduate of Air Force Pilots Academy and Air Force Academy under General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces named after K. Ye. Voroshilov. From 1957 served as fighter pilot of fighter regiment in Leningrad Military District.
On August 6-7, 1961 he made the first continuous space flight aboard orbital spacecraft "Vostok-2", orbiting Earth over 17 times (the second space flight made by Soviet citizen after Yuriy Gagarin).
From 1976 to 1991 employed on the staff of the USSR Ministry of Defense.
In 1991-1992 held the position of the First Deputy Head of space-units under USSR Ministry of Defense.
Since 1992 held the position President of closed joint-stock company "Space -Earth".
